Mara was raised in Morelos, Mexico. The daughter of an American historian and a Mexican historian, she grew up bilingual and was exposed to two very different yet very rich cultures. She graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy in 2005 after two years as a Creative Writing major, and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College with a combined major in Creative Writing, Literary Analysis, Graphic Storytelling, and Film History. Returning to her home town in Cuernavaca, Morelos, she taught English at Marymount Institute, a bilingual middle and high school. In 2015 she graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a Master’s degree in Sequential Art. At Idyllwild Arts Academy she teaches both Spanish and Creative Writing.
