Chris Reba, born in Tarzana, California, has studied composition with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Roger Reynolds, Chaya Czernowin, Cort Lippe, Steven Kazuo Takasugi, Rand Steiger, Jeff Stadelman and studied contrabass with Bertram Turetzky. He received his Masters degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in Music Composition, his bachelors in Music Composition and Bass performance from the University of California, San Diego and his associates in music, with emphasis in music recording, from MiraCosta Community College in Oceanside, California. Chris has held positions as a tenured Associate Professor of Music and Sound Recording, and Coordinator of Music at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, as well as full-time Instructor of Music and Sound Recording at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, New York and an Adjunct Instructor of Music at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Chris has served on the executive board of the New York section of the Audio Engineering Society and is a published member of the AES. He is a voting member of the Grammy’s, a founding member, Technical Director and executive board member of Megill & Co., a not-for-profit theater and dance company based in Los Angeles, and was a founding member of the Open Music Foundation, a New York not-for-profit organization for composers and artists dedicated to the promotion of artistic expression based on unconventional, experimental, open-form and especially graphical forms of communicating musical ideas. As part of the Notations 21 Project some of Chris’ graphic musical scores have been on exhibit in galleries around the country and in Europe. He is also a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
As a musician Chris has played in dozens of bands, ensembles and with distinguished artists in many genres of music including Grammy Award winning artists Sean and Sara Watkins, and Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, Larry Mitchell (solo artist and guitarist with Tracy Chapman), Connecticut award winning artist Heather Fay, Chris Prescott of Pinback, No Knife and the Jade Shader, Jason Mraz, jazz pianist Danny Green, the Hamden Symphony Orchestra, the Open Music Ensemble, composer Will Redman and others.
As a professional audio engineer Chris has worked with artists from a wide variety of music genres including Buena Vista Social Club, Nickel Creek, Jason Mraz, Charles Neville, Craig Taborn, Matt Maneri, Dan Tepfer, The Claudia Quintet, Barry Altschul, Alvin Lucier, Mark Dresser, Mary Halvorson, Ches Smith, Kenwood Dennard and many others. He has recent album credits with Wayne Escoffery, Mad Satta, Yale’s Shades acapella, Centaur Records, Heather Fay, The Wayne Escoffery Quintet with Rachel Z, the Files and Fires, Myra Melford/Ben Goldberg Duo and Nate Wooley.
