Since 1950, the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program, formerly known as ISOMATA, has offered intensive workshops in visual arts (ceramics, jewelry, painting, mixed media, scultpture, & Native American arts), writing/poetry, dance, film, music, and theatre to students of all ages and abilities, including families. The 205-acre campus is located at the 5,000’ level in the spectacular San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. This tranquil site, remote from urban distractions, affords students a serene and focused learning environment. Idyllwild is a relaxing 2.5 hour drive from Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego and is easily accessible from all airports in the Southern California region.
Students enroll in one course or workshop per session which becomes the primary focus of their participation. In general, students of all ages can expect to be involved in course-related activities 6-8 hours per day. Individual course schedules vary according to the requirements of each discipline. The faculty of more than 300 professional artist-teachers looks forward to working with students of all levels of ability and experience in a nurturing and non-competitive atmosphere that stresses strong educational and personal values along with outstanding achievement.
Courses are offered by age: Children’s Center (5-12); Junior Artists Center (11-13); Youth Arts Center (13-18); Adult Arts Center (19+). Most programs for young people are two weeks long, with a few one-week courses for children. Workshops for adults range in length from one to six days, with many weekend options available.
For families with an artistic flair, make unforgettable memories at Idyllwild Arts Family Camp. For seven days and six nights, you and your family can share the magic that is Idyllwild. Choose from a wide range of arts activities to spark your creative talents. Daily hikes offer the opportunity for Family Campers to explore the beautiful natural surroundings.
For more than 60 years this annual tradition has continued to offer rare opportunities for creative self-discovery in the arts. Every summer, approximately1,800 children, teenagers and adults participate in hands-on workshops under the pines, pursuing interests in creative writing, dance, music, theatre and visual art, and taught by some of America's finest artists. Weeklong festivals and special programs, including our famed Native Arts program, bring an added dimension and depth to specific artistic pursuits.
