The Parks Exhibition Center
is a focal point of the Idyllwild Arts campus. It is open throughout the year and serves to enrich the Academy and Summer Program by featuring the work of students, faculty and visiting artists. The 1400 square foot space was dedicated in 2002 and is a gift of Elizabeth B. Parks.

During the academic year, September through May, the Parks Center is an integral part of the Academy's Visual Art program. It offers students the opportunity to view art works firsthand in a professional gallery setting. Parks is an invaluable educational tool, providing a forum for critical dialogue between the students and artists. It has become a dynamic part of Idyllwild Arts, hosting readings, performances and local community events.

November 4 – December 6
Kim Abeles Exhibition

(October 6, 2011) Idyllwild Arts, Parks Exhibition Center is pleased to announce an exhibit of work by Kim Abeles, opening Nov. 4th, to Dec. 5th, 2011.  Ms. Abeles will

give a lecture on her work at 4 pm on Nov. 4th, with a reception following. At a time when Idyllwild Arts is examining its own environmental impact, as well as social responsibilities to the wider community, Kim Abeles¹ visit is fitting.  As an artist whose work responds and collaborates with a variety of communities, social and ecological, Kim¹s work is always an experience, engaging a rich dialogue with the viewers.  At the end of the run of the show, Ms. Abeles will do a workshop with the students relating the self to the community and their environment.

The history of Kim Abeles career spans a rich field of ideas and cultures. As an American Field Service student to Utsunomiya, Japan in 1969, Abeles met Buddhist priest, Kosai Kobari, who introduced her to traditional Japanese arts.  Since 1985, Kim Abeles has created many artworks about the environment with an emphasis on air pollution, especially with the The Smog Collector series.  Abeles has organized and co-curated traveling exhibitions related to the AIDS epidemic, the Gulf War, air pollution, and activist art.

Her HIV/AIDS Tarot cards, created in 1992 address the socioeconomic as well as medical aspects of the disease: an image is printed on one side of the cards, and an informative text is printed on the other side. She created theRun-off Dolphin Suitcase through a commission from the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project (1994).

The urban environment, feminism, aging, HIV/AIDS, and labor are some of the
specific issues I have engaged through my work. In all cases, materials and form are inspired connections to my intellectual pursuits. I am a concept-seeker and an object-maker. The work emerges from my hands as both feminine and masculine, seeking objective and subjective realities, and spoken in a visual language of the poetic spirit. (Quoted from her artist statement.)

The show at Idyllwild Arts, Kim Abeles, includes some of her environmental work including the Paper Person, smog plates, Pearls from a recent Community Collaboration with domestic violence survivors, a video wall and more.

The show is open to the public.  Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm, or by appointment.  For more information, please contact Mallory Cremin at Parks Exhibition Center, Idyllwild Arts, (951) 659-2171-ext2251, or email parksmanager@idyllwildarts.org.
