Choosing to disrupt her formal education in 1982 to live as an expatriate overseas in Saudi Arabia and Japan, Emily found many opportunities to live her education, providing her with many one-of-a-kind experiences. Living and working in international communities has allowed her to expand her way of thinking and to communicate and relate in a variety of ways. While in Japan, Emily created, organized and headed a system of fundraising for Yokohama International School, which could then be reproduced by each country represented at the school and which would help future volunteers. She lobbied for and created the first school newsletter, The YIS Messenger, and was initially responsible for everything from brainstorming possible articles for future, keeping expense reports, purchasing supplies, PR and communiqués, to arranging a team for production and distribution. Using her design background, Emily designed a children’s library for a more pro-child atmosphere in a previously adult oriented athletic club for overseas internationals. This project led to updating and refurbishing an aged playground and creating suggestions as to ways to expand dining options for children in the snack bar and restaurant. Returning to the States in 1997, Emily used her talent and background as a design and color consultant, organizing, utilizing, designing and decorating. She has recently joined the Advancement team at IAA as Development Assistant, assisting in Foundation and Corporation development and all aspects of Capital Campaign.
