2012 Visual Arts Alumni Exhibition February 10 - March 2
It has been a dozen years since Idyllwild Arts has hosted an Alumni Show for Visual Art. The school has doubled in age and the former students are ranging into greater fields and follies. Last year when David Reid-Marr, a sculptor on the faculty, suggested it was time for a show of our former students, we jumped on it with gusto. First, we invited Shepard Fairey, who is deepening his fame after the Obama HOPE poster, and Exit Through the Gift Shop documented the street art creed. Monica Lundy is making waves in Northern California with her inmate portraits on linen, and dissolving yet detailed gouaches. Nate Lowman, literally of the Idyllwild Arts family, currently shredding the gallery scene in NYC, will lend one of his bullet holes. And the list goes on, with paintings by Paul Waddell, Arianna Sikorski and Youree Jin.Artist books by Alison Yates, Sung Yun Yang and Erin Latimer invite your hand. The paintings of Jiwon Yoon are more like flesh on canvas than acrylic. Laurel Sparks is painting abstracts of festive lighting, and Richelle Gribble is pushing painting of crowds into new organisms. And more paintings by Paul Waddell, Arianna Sikorski and Youree Jin. A gorgeous creature, actually graphite on paper, emerged from Kaelen Green.
In the field of photography, Jovielle Gers will show a few images of her time working at Naropa, including one of the Dalai Lama. Greg Jensen is an Art Director who documented the fall and aftermath at Ground Zero in New York City.
The work gets crazier. Hawkeye Glenn is using his sculptor skills with metal and design, making functional fixtures, which seem extracted from a home on Mount Olympus. Jonathan Taube and Tada Kono are playing with politics and prickly pears, Krista Peters is creating portraits in brass, and Daniel Gray will make a site-specific installation. CJ Dunn has lettered the gallery with his design.
Did I mention food? The Secret Goldfish Baking Company of Los Angeles will lay a spread of baked goodies, care of Molly Greenwood and crew. - Mallory Cremin, Gallery Manager and Curator.
