The Idyllwild Arts Academy is one of only three boarding high schools for the performing arts in the United States. Aspiring artists and musicians from throughout the world attend the Academy to study visual art, dance, theatre, creative writing, interdisciplinary arts, moving pictures, and music. The Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra (IAAO) is widely regarded as one of the best youth ensembles in existence. IAAO students frequently win major competitions and are sought by the most prestigious colleges, universities and conservatories in the nation. They regularly appear on such national broadcast venues as Public Radio International’s “From the Top” and the Music Center Spotlight Awards.

Renowned musicians who have recently performed with the IAAO include Vijay Iyer, Richard Thompson, Harry Shearer, violinist Hilary Hahn, violist Paul Neubauer, flutist Emily Beynon of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, cellist Matt Haimovitz, Martin Chalifour (Concertmaster, LA Philharmonic), Carrie Dennis (Principal Viola, LA Philharmonic), Grammy-nominated soprano Tony Arnold,   and the Miró and Kronos String Quartets, among many others. Notable conductors who have worked with the IAAO include Ransom Wilson, Leonard Slatkin, music director of the National Symphony Orchestra and Jorge Mester, conductor of the Pasadena Symphony and the current Music Director Peter Askim.

The IAAO has also been at the forefront of Contemporary Music, having commissioned and given the World Premieres of works by Richard Danielpour, Ezra Laderman and Christopher Theofanidis and Bruce Adolphe. This May, the IAAO will present an entire program of World Premieres at Walt Disney Concert Hall's REDCAT, including commissioned works from legendary jazz bassist Rufus Reid, former L.A.
