Parks Exhibition Center
The Parks Exhibition Center is a focal point of the Idyllwild
Arts campus. It is open throughout the year and serves
to enrich the Academy and Summer Program by featuring
the work of students, faculty and visiting artists. The
1400 square foot space was dedicated in 2002 and is a
gift of Elizabeth B. Parks.
During the academic year, September through May, the Parks
Center is an integral part of the Academy's Visual Art
program. It offers students the opportunity to view art
works firsthand in a professional gallery setting. Parks
is an invaluable educational tool, providing a forum for
critical dialogue between the students and artists. It
has become a dynamic part of Idyllwild Arts, hosting readings,
performances and local community events.

National Performance Art Month
January 16 – February 7, 2009

Curators: Morgan Satterfield and Paul Waddell
Event Dates:
(All events are located at the Parks Exhibition Center
on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts Academy and
scheduled to be at 6:00p.m.)

Jan 21: Performance Workshop / Paul Waddell
Jan 23: Mario Ybarra Jr.
Jan 28: Video Screening
Jan 30: Jeff Huckleberry
Feb 7: The Present Tense / Wounded Lion
The Parks Exhibition Center at Idyllwild Arts is pleased
to present National Performance Art Month. The exhibition
will run January 16 through February 7 with a schedule
of performances, video screenings and workshops.
Using the rhetoric of National Educational Awareness Months
popularized in public schools throughout the United States,
National Performance Art Month intends to raise awareness
and educate students through a survey of historical documentation
and live works of performance art. Utilizing the peculiar
venue of a contemporary art gallery housed within the
grounds of a private arts high school as a curatorial
departure point, National Performance Art Month promotes
a dialogue about what constitutes a valuable educational
experience in the fine arts in a climate of cross disciplinary
art practices.
Given performance arts history and influence on current
art practices the exhibition encourages high school students
to consider the aesthetic and contextual value of a live
experiential event (or temporal action) as a complete
artwork. In an ironic gesture the show employs the rigid
structure of forced educational tolerance through the
appropriation of the aesthetics and ideals of National
Educational Awareness Months in order to educate students
about an art form that at its core questions the value
of those structures.
In order to show a cross section of current performance
art practices the artists included work with varied methods
of live performance ranging from durational events, the
body as allegory, direct political activism, hybridization
of rock and roll and art and the deployment of technology
to create social unity.
In conjunction with the live performances there will be
two evenings of video screenings that include documentation
of early performance work as well as recently documented
live events and performance work produced specifically
for video. The video screenings will serve as a counter
point to the live events allowing viewers to contemplate
the difference between live performance art and its document.

Eric
Metzler has been a teacher of photography for the past
twenty years at Idyllwild Arts Academy. Lathing Lilies,
his twenty year retrospective, metaphorically references
the two major influences in his work—the early traditional
work in nature, portraiture and form versus the later
conceptual work in mixed media, sculpture and technology.
The work utilizes broad applications of symbolism, analogy,
exaggeration, abstraction, humor, religion, politics,
and technology.
