When you are not involved in classes, rehearsals or other activities, chances are you'll spend much of your time studying and relaxing in your dorm room or the common room. With a little time, the dormitory becomes a comfortable and friendly "home away from home." We do our best to provide a family-like atmosphere in our dorms. There is close interaction between students and dorm parents, fostering an atmosphere of care and mutual understanding.

Dormitory Supervision
The dormitories are supervised at all times. Faculty/dorm parents reside in or next to the dormitories. They are visible, available, and approachable for students. Dorm parents are responsible for the well-being of residents and the implementation of dormitory policies. The two Residential Life Coordinators also serve as dorm parents. Among other things, they are responsible for the daily activities and smooth operation within the dorms. Student Prefects assist in dormitory supervision. These older students provide good role modeling, experience, and leadership for the younger students.

Roommates
Each student, with the exception of prefects, has at least one roommate. Students are assigned roommates at the beginning of the year, with student requests for roommates given careful consideration.

English-speaking students may voluntarily assist newly arriving international students with their English language skills by choosing to be their roommates. We encourage this mutually beneficial situation. Any student wishing to do so should notify the Dean of Students.

Students are encouraged to decorate their room with pictures, posters, plants, and personal objects. In addition, each student receives a phone voice line in his/her room for telephone, fax or computer use. The phone service includes voice message box and call forwarding features.

Quiet Hours and Curfew
After dinner, from the hours of 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM, quiet time is maintained in the dorm so students may complete their homework. Quiet Hours coincide with the evening study hall period.

Each evening, students must be in their rooms at curfew, which is 10:00 PM Sunday through Friday. Lights-out is at 10:30 PM. On Saturday nights, curfew is 11:00 PM.

If a student must be out of the dorm for rehearsal or practice during that time, he/she must sign out. Quiet Hours sign-out sheets are posted next to the students' doors.

Dorm Meetings
Dorm meetings are held once a week to discuss important information. All residents are required to attend these meetings. The meetings are an opportunity for students to make announcements and voice concerns. They provide a time for all residents to come together to discuss community living and to smooth over any difficulties students may be having. The gatherings also provide a time for special recognition.

Laundry Facilities
Coin-operated washers and dryers are available to students either in or next to their dorm. Students are requested to have a laundry bag, and all clothes should be well marked. Students are expected to keep their clothes neat and clean.

Items to Bring
It should be noted that the Arts Academy is in a mountain environment. Idyllwild has a winter season which includes temperatures below freezing, snow and rain. Temperatures may vary greatly daily. Since storage space is limited, extra clothes should be kept to a minimum. Besides the usual clothing, the following are also recommended:
