General Information
The English as a Second Language program is designed to provide quality instruction to students whose first language is not English so that they, like native speakers, may meet the academic requirements for graduation as outlined in the Student Parent Handbook and prescribed by the University of California Admissions Standards. Three levels of instruction are offered to develop proficiency in oral and written English: beginning, intermediate and advanced. Core classes include listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. Class size is limited to provide individual attention and instructors are committed to increasing intercultural understanding as well as language proficiency.
Grade level for international students will not be determined until each student takes a comprehensive placement exam to measure their reading, writing and speaking abilities in English administered on campus by ESL faculty. Students are then placed in the appropriate ESL level and grade level is assigned.
Students must achieve an average grade of (70%) C- in each ESL class before they can proceed to the next level of ESL.
